Thousands of Indian companies have expanded internationally — UAE branches, UK subsidiaries, Singapore regional hubs, Canadian operations. For these companies, a critical question is: "Can our Indian ISO certificate be used for our overseas operations, or do we need a new one?" This guide gives you the definitive answer.
Can an Indian ISO Certificate Be Used Abroad?
The answer depends on how the certificate is scoped:
- Single entity with overseas branch — If the certificate scope covers "head office and all branches including [overseas location]", it can be used for the overseas branch in most cases
- Separate overseas entity — A subsidiary with its own legal entity registration typically needs its own ISO certificate scoped to that entity
- Parent company certificate for Indian operations only — Cannot be used for overseas subsidiary qualification
When You Need a New ISO Certificate
- Your overseas entity is a separately registered company (UK Ltd, UAE LLC, etc.)
- The overseas entity needs to qualify separately for local procurement (UK CCS, UAE ADNOC)
- The overseas entity's operations are significantly different from India operations
When Your Indian Certificate Works Abroad
- The overseas location is a branch office (not a separate company)
- The overseas activities are included in the certificate scope
- The buyer only requires the parent company's certification
- Indian-owned UAE/UK branches where the parent company's certificate covers all branches
NABCB vs UKAS — Does It Matter Abroad?
Both NABCB (India) and UKAS (UK) are IAF member accreditation bodies. Under IAF's Multilateral Recognition Arrangement (MLA), certificates from both are equally recognized in all 90+ IAF member economies. A NABCB-accredited CB certificate is as valid as a UKAS-accredited CB certificate in the UK, UAE, USA, or any other country.
Indian Companies in UAE — Special Note
UAE has one of the largest Indian business communities in the world. For Indian-owned UAE companies:
- UAE government entities, ADNOC, and Dubai Municipality accept IAF-accredited certificates from Indian CBs
- NABCB-accredited CB certificates are verified on IAF CertSearch and accepted
- For a UAE LLC, Elite Assured can scope the ISO certificate to cover the UAE company specifically
- This is significantly more cost-effective than a separate UAE CB certification
