GeM portal (Government e-Marketplace) is India's largest government procurement platform — with over Rs.4 lakh crore in annual purchases. If your business wants to sell on GeM, ISO 9001 certification is not optional. It is mandatory for 1,000+ product categories.
This complete guide covers everything you need to know about ISO certification for GeM portal — which certificate is accepted, how to add it on GeM, cost, timeline, and how to avoid the most common mistake that gets certificates rejected.
Why GeM Portal Requires ISO Certification
GeM was launched by the Government of India to make public procurement transparent, efficient and corruption-free. To ensure quality of products sold on GeM, the government mandates quality certifications for sellers in key categories.
ISO 9001 is the most widely required certification on GeM because it directly addresses quality management. When you hold ISO 9001, the government knows your production processes meet international standards — making your products reliable for government use.
What GeM Says
GeM portal guidelines state: "ISO certification (ISO 9001) is a mandatory requirement for seller registration in categories where quality compliance is critical. Certificates must be verifiable on IAF CertSearch database."

Critical Warning — IAF CertSearch Requirement
This is the Biggest Mistake GeM Sellers Make
GeM portal verifies every ISO certificate on IAF CertSearch. If your certificate is not found on IAF CertSearch (iafcertsearch.org), GeM will REJECT it — even if it looks genuine. Many cheap ISO certificates sold in India are NOT on IAF CertSearch. Always verify on iafcertsearch.org before purchasing. All Elite Assured certificates are IAF CertSearch verified.
To check if any certificate is IAF CertSearch verified:
- Go to iafcertsearch.org
- Search by company name or certificate number
- If found — genuine and GeM-accepted
- If not found — certificate will be rejected by GeM

MSME Price Preference — Major Benefit of ISO for GeM
If your business is registered as MSME/Udyam AND holds ISO 9001 certification, you receive a 25% price preference in government procurement on GeM. This means even if a non-MSME competitor quotes 25% less than you, your bid is still treated as equal or better.
"In FY 2025-26, the Government of India purchased over Rs.2.5 lakh crore worth of goods from MSME sellers on GeM — with ISO-certified MSMEs winning a disproportionate share of tenders."
